FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) — A shootout at a southeast side gas station Wednesday night was caught on surveillance cameras.
Surveillance images widely circulated online shows a shootout at the Sunoco station at Oxford and Holton Wednesday night.
Police say 41-year-old Bruce King tried to rob people in a car at a gas pump, when one of their friends came outside and grabbed the gun he has a permit to carry.
That’s when the bullets started flying.
Police say King and the young man continued to shoot at each other, angling for better defensive positions behind cars and gas pumps.
Sgt. Sofia Rosales-Scatena says she was impressed with the young man’s quick thinking to protect the young women in the back of the car, yelling for them either to move or stay put, depending on what police say was King’s position.
“We don’t anticipate any charges coming out of this for him at all. Looks like it’s a pure self defense, and obviously from the video we can see that,” Sgt. Rosales-Scatena says.
Police believe this was a crime of opportunity.
“On the video earlier, you can see him walking down the street. I think he just saw some younger kids, thought he was going to go up there and get some cash or some phones or something from the kids, and turns out he picked the wrong kids,” she says.
Customers at the gas station say it’s amazing more people weren’t hurt.
“It’s just the safety of everyone else. Because of the pumps, too, like you said, you could easily just shoot one of them and it causes a lot more damage to everyone. It’s definitely something that shouldn’t be happening but unfortunately it is out here,” Oscar Buendia says.
Police say the clear surveillance images will help to prosecute King.
“This is like, aaaah, the mecca of cases where you have the video, you have witnesses, you have victims. Everybody giving the same accounts as to what happened,” Rosales-Scatena says.
And while impressed with the young man’s courage and poise, Rosales-Scatena does have one word of advice.
“Don’t leave a gun in a car. If you’re permitted to carry, carry that weapon. He was lucky he was able to get back to that car and retrieve that, and I’m thankful for that. But he is permitted to carry that gun, so carry it. Don’t leave it in a running, unlocked car,” she says.
King is preliminarily charged with armed robbery, theft, and possession of a handgun by a serious violent felon.
